SON OF SARDAAR and JAB TAK HAI JAAN
With no major films listed for release this Friday, due to the ‘Diwali’ blockbusters, the attention shifts to the two Tuesday releases, Ajay Devgn’s SON OF SARDAAR and Shah Rukh Khan’s JAB TAK HAI JAAN. While both the films are likely to embark on a good start, SON OF SARDAAR has better chances at the single screens and JAB TAK HAI JAAN will fare best at the multiplexes. Trade insiders put the strong regions/circuits of SOS as U.P. East Punjab and Central India and for JAB TAK HAI JAAN the best run is expected from Delhi City, Mumbai circuit, Hyderabad- Nizam, Mysore Circuit and West Bengal. In the end count, the film which has a longer shelf life and the one that the families and youths prefer will be the winner. As far as the initial advance booking trends are concerned, the winner appears to be JAB TAK HAI JAAN, but that is only an indication.
Last week’s major releases were Vikram Bhatt’s 1920–EVIL RETURNS, Anurag Kashyap’s LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA, Rajpal Yadav’s ATA PATA LAPATA and the black comedy LE GAYA SADDAM. And just as we had the said, the front runner (and the clear winner) turned out to be the Tia-Aftab starrer 1920 – EVIL RETURNS. The film has not only scored during the weekend but is also quite stable during the weekdays, and given the reasonable all inclusive release cost (8-9 crore), 1920 – EVIL RETURNS is all set to be big success. The other major release of the week, LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA, failed to make a mark at the ticket window with poor collections, while the remaining films were washouts.
Moving on Prakash Jha’s CHAKRAVYUH could not make a mark during its extended week (9-days) run and collected 1.20 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 35 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 7 lakhs from Surat, 9.50 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 4.65 lakhs from Rajkot, 16 lakhs from Pune, 6 lakhs from Nasik, 1.65 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.35 crore from Delhi city, 20 lakhs from Noida, 11.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 10.65 lakhs from Kanpur, 23 lakhs from Lucknow, 6.50 lakhs from Agra, 7.15 lakhs from Allahabad, 4 lakhs from Aligarh, 21.75 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.65 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 2 lakhs from Panipat, 5 lakhs from Chandigarh, 4.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.25 lakhs from Amritsar, 32 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.65 lakhs from Siliguri, 2 lakhs from Guwahati, 8.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 11 lakhs from Raipur, 16.50 lakhs from Indore (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 4.20 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 13.75 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 20.50 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 3.50 lakhs from Ajmer, 2 lakhs from Bikaner, 6 lakhs from Kota, 25 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2.75 lakhs from Aurangabad, 30 lakhs from Bangalore, 2 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 1.55 lakhs from Madras and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi. Netting 16 crore during the extended opening week CHAKRAVYUH has failed at the box-office.
Emraan Hashmi could not weave his success magic and his latest, RUSH , barely collected 60 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 21.75 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.65 lakhs from Surat, 2.55 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 7 cinemas unreceived), 1.75 lakhs from Rajkot, 4 lakhs from Pune, 2 lakhs from Nasik, 20 lakhs from Delhi city, 5 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.75 lakhs from Kanpur, 3 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 4 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.25 lakhs from Jalandhar, 9 lakhs from Calcutta, 4 lakhs from Nagpur, 3 lakhs from Raipur, 5 lakhs from Indore, 6.50 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 1.10 lakhs from Ajmer, 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 2.20 lakhs from Kota, 20 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad, 5 lakhs from Bangalore and 1 lakh from Madras. Netting a paltry 3.50 crore during the opening week from India, RUSH, has flopped.

While on Karan Johar’s STUDENT OF THE YEAR, the film saw a heavy fall in the second week but the task has already been done in the opening week itself. During the week SOTY collected 2.10 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 34 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 13.60 lakhs from Surat, 11.20 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 6.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 20.50 lakhs from Pune, 9.15 lakhs from Nasik, 1.65 crore from Delhi city, 18 lakhs from Noida, 16.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 12.55 lakhs from Kanpur, 23 lakhs from Lucknow, 7.25 lakhs from Agra, 5.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 23.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 3.50 lakhs from Panipat, 7.65 lakhs from Chandigarh, 11.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2.50 lakhs from Amritsar, 1.35 lakhs from Ambala, 75 lakhs from Calcutta, 6 lakhs from Siliguri, 4.50 lakhs from Guwahati, 22.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 12.65 lakhs from Raipur, 21 lakhs from Indore, 4.65 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 11 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 27.65 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 5.55 lakhs from Ajmer, 2.20 lakhs from Bikaner, 7.25 lakhs from Kota, 45 lakhs from Hyderabad, 3.20 lakhs from Aurangabad, 55 lakhs from Bangalore, 4.20 lakhs from Vishakhapatnam, 3.25 lakhs from Madras and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi. Netting another 14.50 crore, STUDENT OF THE YEAR has netted 59.50 crore in two weeks from India and is a hit, based on its worldwide run and non-theatrical rights. The film has done well in the overseas (better in US) grossing £302,500 from UK and $635,000 from the US till the third weekend (2-4 November).
Checking out Sridevi’s ENGLISH VINGLISH, the film is ending its creditable as well as successful run collecting 35 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.35 lakhs from Pune, 1.25 lakhs from Nasik, 15 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.50 lakhs from Noida, 1.35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 7.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 15 lakhs from Hyderabad, 31 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.55 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1.10 lakhs from Kochi. Adding another 1.50 crore, ENGLISH VINGLISH has netted 38.50 crore in four weeks from India and is a semi-hit. ENGLISH VINGLISH has also seen a good (superb in US) run in the overseas grossing £457,000 from UK and $1,829,500 from the US till the fifth weekend (2-4 November).
Concluding with Akshay Kumar’s Paresh Rawal starrer, OMG OH MY GOD!, the film is also ending its superb run as it collected 30 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 20.20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 7.65 lakhs from Surat, 12 lakhs from Baroda, 6.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 7 lakhs from Pune, 1.50 lakhs from Nasik, 3.50 lakhs from Belgaum, 10 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.50 lakhs from Noida, 1.15 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Gurgaon, 5 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.65 lakhs from Raipur, 3 lakhs from Indore, 3.65 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5 lakhs from Bangalore. With another 1.50 crore OMG OH MY GOD! Has netted 80.50 crore in five weeks from India and is a super duper hit. The film has also done quite well in the overseas (good in US), grossing £370,000 from UK and $920,000 from the US till the sixth weekend (2-4 October).
