Box Office Report : 23rd February 2012

Thursday, February 23, 2012 4:01:41 PM (IST) | Abid, Bollywood Trade Editorial

This Friday will see one of the most interesting clash, where two well promoted and awaited films of similar genre are releasing. Both additionally boast of popular music. Yes, in question are the Madhavan, Bipasha and Dipannita starrer, JODI BREAKERS and the Riteish-Genelia project TERE NAAL LOVE HO GAYA. It is very difficult to choose the winner and hopefully both will appeal to the audience (it has happened before!).

Last Friday's major release Fox Star Studios' Prateik-Amy starrer, EKK DEEWANA THA, has been totally rejected by the audience. Not only did the film start on a poor to dull note but showed little or no improvement on the following days. EDT has also been rejected in the overseas, grossing £24,200 from UK and $ 17,000 from the US during the opening weekend (17-19 February). The other two releases of the same week, MARRIED TO AMERICA and '?' fared worse and are washouts.

After a dull to decent start, Shakun Batra's EK MAIN AUR EKK TU picked up noticeably during the weekend, but a big jump was clearly missing. The film was steady at the lower end during the weekdays (Valentine day saw good numbers) as it collected 5.50 crore from Bombay (collections from 45 cinemas unreceived), 1.20 crore from Ahmedabad, 20.65 lakhs from Surat, 35.20 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 14.20 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.55 lakhs from Jamnagar, 64 lakhs from Pune, 15.65 lakhs from Nasik, 14.50 lakhs from Goa, 5.45 lakhs from Belgaum, 4.50 crore from Delhi city, 55 lakhs from Noida, 33 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 19.65 lakhs from Kanpur, 34 lakhs from Lucknow, 11 lakhs from Agra, 10 lakhs from Allahabad, 91.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 10.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 4 lakhs from Kuruksherta, 6.35 lakhs from Panipat, 26 lakhs from Chandigarh, 6 lakhs from Zirakpur, 10 lakhs from Jalandhar, 8 lakhs from Amritsar, 8.35 lakhs from Ludhiana, 5.40 lakhs from Bhatinda, 4.70 lakhs from Ambala, 96.65 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.50 lakhs from Darjeeling, 9.25 lakhs from Siliguri, 6.85 lakhs from Guwahati, 31.35 lakhs from Nagpur, 9.50 lakhs from Jabalpur, 17 lakhs from Raipur, 38 lakhs from Indore, (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 6 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 18 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 57.35 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 6.35 lakhs from Ajmer, 3.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 12.55 lakhs from Kota, 10.65 lakhs from Udaipur, 50.65 lakhs from Hyderabad, 7.50 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 crore from Bangalore, 9.50 lakhs from Mangalore, 4 lakhs from Vijayawada, 8.25 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 3 lakhs from Madras and 6.55 lakhs from Kochi. During the opening week EK MAIN AUR EKK TU has netted a good to decent 30.70 crores. The Kareena-Imran starrer is an average fare but seeing the second weekend trend a 'hit' or even 'semi-hit' looks difficult if not impossible for the 37-38 crore (all inclusive) film. EK MAIN AUR EKK TU has done wonderfully in the overseas (Imran's best ever!) grossing £528,250 from UK till the second weekend (17-19 February) and $1,058,300 from the US till the second (4-day ; 17-20 February) weekend.

The other release of the week, VALENTINE'S NIGHT, starring real life couple Payal Rohatgi and Sangram Singh failed to achieve any significant collections and is a washout.

Meanwhile the Akshaye Khanna and Shriya Saran starrer GALI GALI CHOR HAI could not improve upon its dull start and has ended its run in the second week.

Concluding with Karan Malhotra's AGNEEPATH, the film managed to ward off the challenge from EMAET (ironically from the same banner!) as it saw another fruitful week collecting 1.20 crore from Bombay, 35 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5.65 lakhs from Surat, 9.60 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 9 lakhs from Rajkot , 3.20 lakhs from Jamnagar, 11.60 lakhs from Pune, 6.80 lakhs from Nasik, 2.20 lakhs from Goa, 1.50 lakhs from Belgaum, 60 lakhs from Delhi city, 11.20 lakhs from Noida, 7.10 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 8 lakhs from Kanpur, 13 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.15 lakhs from Agra, 2.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs from Aligarh, 11.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.10 lakhs from Kuruksherta, 1.25 lakhs from Panipat, 5 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.70 lakhs from Zirakpur, 3.20 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2 lakhs from Amritsar, 1.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 1.50 lakhs from Bhatinda, 16.80 lakhs from Calcutta, 12.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 5.70 lakhs from Jabalpur, 6.10 lakhs from Raipur, 8.75 lakhs from Indore(collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 9.35 lakhs from Bhopal, 29 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 2.65 lakhs from Ajmer, 3.55 lakhs from Kota, 3 lakhs from Udaipur, 15 lakhs from Hyderabad, 5.50 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 20.50 lakhs from Bangalore, 2.30 lakhs from Mangalore, 1.25 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1 .20 lakhs from Kochi. Adding another 7 crores, AGNEEPATH has netted a huge 120 crores in three weeks from India. The Hrithik-Priyanka starrer is a super hit. AGNEEPATH is also an overseas super hit with more than $ 6 m as it grossed £725,200 from UK till the fourth weekend (17-19 February) $1,981,600 from the US up to the fourth (4-day ; 17-20 February) weekend.
