10 years of LAGAAN- A landmark achievement for cinema in the modern times

Indeed, it has been 10 years when cricket, sports which is not national as declared national by the government statute in the country was used as the binding element to throw away its original proponents from the country. The film was LAGAAN and cricket was sports, now that LAGAAN has completed 10 years, its aura still continues to grow and inspires millions to fight against all odds. Such was the impact of LAGAAN as a film that it entered the haloed portals of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad as a case study, and LAGAAN was the first film which was used as a case study for management students of the country from the country in all probability.
While it may be too naive and germane to comment upon the aura of LAGAAN, one thing that was catalytic factor in making LAGAAN such a monumental hit was the fact that as a film it did not have a flaw in any form. The introduction of the film in baritone voice of Big B adding to the aura, and Big B doing the same after a pretty long time, i.e. after SHATRANJ KE KHILARI way back more than 25 years.
LAGAAN as a film could attain the cult status also owing to the fact that it created a buzz at the Oscars in the manner in which it was successfully marketed as a film worth its every grain of salt, the same effort not being tried out for an Indian film hitherto and from then on every year a nomination of an Indian film at the Oscars has been an event that gets good coverage, thanks to the efforts made by LAGAAN in this regard.
If the direction of Ashutosh Gowarikar was what catapulted him into a director of international stature, for A R Rahman who had given the music for LAGAAN it was his brush with international exposure, eventually paving the way for him to earn an Oscar eventually for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. One thing about LAGAAN that is seldom talked about is the Bhajan of the film "O Palan hare", which endeared the audience and it was indeed after a really long time that a Bhajan could gain so much popularity. As a music director, for Rahman, it indeed was a monumental achievement.
On the personal front for Aamir Khan LAGAAN also marked fostering of his relationship with Kiran Rao who was one of the assistant directors for LAGAAN which eventually culminated into marriage. Above all, LAGAAN marked the continuation of family tradition by Aamir Khan, entering into film production, a forte that belonged to his family; father Tahir Hussain being eminent producer of his times. Post-LAGAAN Aamir Khan has given quite an interesting choice to the viewers, and with DELHI BELLY he would surely gain new stature, as it is again Big B who is giving the voice over in the film.
