AGNEEPATH and return of Sanjay Dutt as a dreadful villain

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 12:27:11 PM (IST) | Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade Editorial

Rating:

SANJAY DUTT in AGNEEPATH
Trust Karan Johar to surprise the film viewing public by initiating one surprise or the other through his cinematic oeuvre and his latest offering AGNEEPATH is no exception. As a matter of fact, there is a hunch that AGNEEPATH could be talked about more for the negative role that Sanjay Dutt is playing in the film, the role that was essayed by Danny Dengzongpa, of Kancha Cheena, in the original version of the film AGNEEPATH starring Big B.

To interpret the role differently and create a landmark in his acting career, Sanjay Dutt has gone bald in AGNEEPATH and it adds more menace to his role, menace with a glint of mischief in his eyes. As a matter of fact, Sanjay Dutt whenever played a negative character in a film has created a record of sorts and has given one of his most scintillating performances. Indeed, for Sanjay Dutt, to be able to play a character with shades of negativity comes rather easily, and if one were to scan through the kind of roles that he has essayed, the roles where he has shown an element of negativity he has earn accolades. However, as he is playing the role of a villain, this feature would restrict itself to highlighting the roles where he has played a villain to underline the fact that Sanjay Dutt indeed has a parallel career awaiting if he decides to make a shift in his career.

KHALNAYAK
Subhash Ghai’s magnum opus, and possibly the last mega block buster that came out of Mukta Arts, had Sanjay Dutt playing the role of a menacing terrorist and he also had a title song for himself ‘Nayak nahi, Khalnayak hoon main’. With a Madhuri Dixit as a love interest, it was a major watershed in his career, and in one of rare instances where screen image became a reality for him, Sanjay Dutt had to undergo incineration under TADA for his alleged activities. The incineration, however, added more enigmatic value to his persona.

VAASTAV
Sanjay Dutt again playing the role of a villain and bringing the element of vulnerability seeking inspiration from the role that his father had played in MOTHER INDIA swept most of the awards for the manner in which he had essayed the role. It was again a monumental achievement in his acting sojourn.

LUCK
A film which could not gain positive vibes from the audience and therefore was a flop had Sanjay Dutt playing a negative character, more like a benevolent don, and it was a rare occasion where he could not score a hit with the audience. It could have been owing to the multitude of actors in LUCK.

ALLADIN
In this fantasy film as well, Sanjay Dutt had played the role of a ringmaster, but as it ventured into the realm of fantasy this film also could not score a hit with the audience.

One only hopes that with AGNEEPATH Sanjay Dutt would again get a new lease of life to his acting career.
