Can 2011 become Rahman's swan song once again?

A.R.RAHMAN
Music maestro A R Rahman would indeed be contemplating how to weave his wand again in such a manner that it mesmerizes his audience and lifts them off their feet through his musical compositions. The task indeed could be onerous as 2010 has not been too kind to him, as far as quotient of success in Hindi films is considered.

Let's check out the facts. In 2010 Rahman had Shankar's ROBOT, Mani Ratnam's RAAVAN, and Abbas Tyrewala's JHOOTHA HI SAHI. ROBOT was a humungous success, but music did not have any role to play in its success. Besides, the controversy associated with signature tune of Common Wealth Games was also a dampener, as his music could not create the sense of pride in the audience in the same manner as it had done with Vande Mataram, which whenever it is played, hardly leaves a fan without a goose bump on his skin. This was the power of his baton and this is the power that seems to have lost its edge in 2010, especially with reference to Hindi music and associated paraphernalia.

Is it a Hollywood effect, that sort of diverted Rahman's attention from Hindi film music scenario? Well, partially yes, as his latest association with Danny Boyle 127 HOURS is in contention for Oscars for the current year as well, and Rahman is keeping his fingers crossed in anticipation.

It therefore begs a question; whether Rahman needs a break in 2011 as in 2010 he seemed to have stretched himself trying to balance between the demands of Hollywood and Bollywood. Well, it indeed does, as it is the outreach of Hindi films that was the catalyst for Rahman to provide him the iconic status that he has acquired today.

His fans of the likes of Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra and Ashutosh Gowarikar would indeed like that Rahman takes a break and comes out with some exciting tunes to set the box office on fire. After all, it was his music that also contributed to the cult status of RANG DE BASANTI and LAGAAN. With Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's DILLI-6 being a flop and Ashutosh Gowarikar's KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY turning out to be a damp squib, indeed, they both need Rahman to reassert their cult status in Hindi cinema. So for Rahman in 2011 Break to Banta hai Boss, if you want to re-establish your hegemony.
