Children films a big achievement for 2011

I AM KALAM
If one were to talk about the major achievements for the year 2011, which surprisingly enough, has not been talked about at all in the mainstream media is the manner in which films on children and films about children were made in the year 2011. It indeed was a very monumental year for the films made with children in mind, and the year end demands that a compilation of such films be made. Among the films on children which made waves are:

I AM KALAM
Nila Madhab Panda’s first film indeed made its presence felt in a big way. Here was a small tea vendor, who fired by the success story of a boy who aspire to be like President Kalam and to this he embarks on path of self education. The underlining theme of the film was that it is the quest for knowledge and the desire to educate oneself that would be the key in developing oneself and carving the path to prosperity. It is a film that had the underlining message that circumstances of birth should not be the reason to deprive a child of opportunities, and a fitting tribute to the film should be that principals of various schools around the country side ought to be shown this film.

STANLEY KA DABBA
Amol Gupte’s first venture was a heart touching tale of a smart boy who does not bring a lunch box to school. The film dealt in delightful detail the world of children and how for the sake of friendship they can challenge their teachers as well, and how important friendship is for a child in school. The stereo type, however of a teacher craving for lunch boxes of the children, a favorite theme of children films, however needs to be done away with as it has been done to death and one only hopes one would not see such scene in 2011.

CHILLAR PARTY
Produced by Salman Khan, CHILLAR PARTY was also an interesting film, where the stereo typed approach that children living in high rise buildings in metropolitan cities have towards menial child workers and how the charm of childhood eventually overcomes the barrier and dissolves boundaries to make friendship and take on the system, charmed the audience around the country. Indeed, as they say the seeds of revolution are nurtured in the young and if children of the country decide amongst themselves to take on the perversities of the system, they can so it by their sheer resolve. One only hopes that in 2012 Salman Khan would take the theme of CHILLAR PARTY forward.

BUBBLE GUM
It was a film that came and went, but it was one of the most sensitive films of the year 2011. Made by first time director, Sanjivan Lal, it was a tale of two brothers, one of them having hearing impairment, and the dilemma that parents have of adjusting attention between two sons, role of parents ably played by Tanvi Azmi and Sachin Khedekar. The film had an old world charm, where the teenage romance was brought out in all innocence, it was a film that should be compulsory viewing for such parents who have a child in the family who may be physically challenged in one form or the other. It is sad that such a film was shown on Doordarshan but the movie channels of cable television are showing no interest to telecast it.

One striking thing about all these films is that in one form or the other the makers have been first timers be it the directors, or the producers. May be that would have done the trick, and one only hopes that the same kind of rich experimentation would be on offer to the viewers in 2012 as well.
