Though Hindi cinema has such a fan following among the children seldom does one come across a film where the child is given the treatment in a very natural manner. As a matter of fact there has been a progressive convergence towards projecting a brat kind of behavior of the child through the cinema, which does no good to help the child in learning manners in an objective manner. While cinema is a reflection of the manner in which the society is developing, and the brat kind of a behavior is a by-product of the nuclear families that has become a characteristic of the Hindi cinema. Here are some examples of the manner in which childhood is projected in Hindi cinema. WE ARE FAMILY: The latest example of such kind of a projection was seen in WE ARE FAMILY, where the children seldom behaved in a normal manner. It is difficult to find a family where the children can be so obdurate and obstinate in their behavior as it was shown in this film.
TARA RUM PUM PUM: In the same vein, TARA RUM PUM PUM also highlighted the same kind of behavior of children who can throw tantrums at the drop of a hat if they are not allowed luxuries of the world.
HUM HAIN RAHEE PYAR KE: It was another film where the children were shown to behave in a rather reactionary manner, but there was also a reason for such behavior, the children being orphaned so they had drawn themselves in, to protect their environment. Incidentally, this has been one of the pet themes of Indian cinema where the behavior of the child in a less than normal manner is equated with some kind of loss of the protective arms of the parents.
KITAAB: It is probably one of the few films where the childhood has been treated in a very natural manner and for this sheer reason this film need to be made mandatory viewing for all the schools, as it provides an exposure to the manner in which childhood need to develop in the natural surroundings, and not in front of the electronic gadgets as has become the wont.
APUR SANSAR: Satyajit Ray's eponymous film is another such example which is one of the masterpieces of Indian cinema for the manner in which the cinematic lens has allowed the child to explore his childhood.
MR. INDIA, MASOOM : Shekhar Kapoor indeed was one of the finest film makers who could handle the children in a very effective manner as he showed with aplomb in both these films. Though he graduated to world cinema, Hindi cinema lost out on a very natural director who could capitalize on exploring children to develop the narrative of a film. One only hopes that some director would stand up and rise to the occasion and make a film which is for the children and it flows in a natural manner, rather than on the crutches of brat behavior to deliver the message.
