SHAHRUKH KHAN and PRIYANKA CHOPRA in DON 2

From the promos of DON - 2, apart from the slick action razzmatazz that it is going to unleash, one thing that is apparent is that the film is going to stand out for its dialogues. The same is conveyed in the frame where Kunal Kapoor introduces himself to Shah Rukh Khan and Shah Rukh Khan tells Kunal Kapoor should not address him as “Sir”, but DON. Indeed, it is these kind of dialogues that become the paisa vasool moments and ensure repeat audience. In the age of multiplexes, it is difficult to find moments of coins being thrown on the screen, but in the single screen theatres around the countryside, it still is an ambience to be soaked into.
While Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have relied on dialogues to back their performances, the third Khan - Aamir Khan, does not have a punch line so far arising from his cinema which could facilitate immediate registration of the character that he may have played so far, if one were to discount the character that he had played in RANGEELA.
That being the maxim, it again is an opportunity to run through the films which have outstanding dialogues that provided the actors who mouthed them to create a symbiotic bond with the audience.
DABANGG: Everybody talks about the mileage that accrued to Salman Khan from this film, but it was Sonakshi Sinha who stole the limelight through the dialogue and it has become sort of a signature announcement about her in the functions that she attends and the programmes that she hosts. The dialogue is “Thappad Se Dar Nahi Lagta Sahib, Pyar Se Lagta Hai”
WANTED: WANTED set the tone for Salman Khan to carve out an exclusive niche for himself fired by the catalyst in the form of dialogue and the dialogue of WANTED, “Ek baar jo maine commitment kar dee to phir main khud ki bhi nahi suntan”, whatever that means, catapulted him into the topmost category in Hindi cinema.
SULTANAT: When Dharmendra started appearing in character roles, it was in all probability in SULTANAT where Dharmendra uttered the word “Kutte”, and it has become his signature dialogue henceforth, as “Khamosh” for Shatrughan Sinha.
MR. INDIA: While Boney Kapoor may have made MR. INDIA for his kid brother Anil Kapoor, it was a powerful of performance by Amrish Puri in the form of Mogambo with the punch line “Mogambo Khush hua”, that endeared the audience. As long as Amrish Puri was alive, he was greeted with this dialogue in most of the functions.
SHOLAY: SHOLAY was a film whose USP was its dialogues, and the dialogue that Hema Malini was identified with “Chal Dhanno Aaj Basanti ki izzat ka sawaal hai” gave her image a new element of chutzpah.
WAQT: Raj Kumar was the original Badshah of dialogues and as long as he was alive he was identified with two of them “Jaani” and “Ye bachcho ke khelne kee cheez nahi, haath kat jaye to khoon nikal aata hai”. Even to this day, it is dialogue delivery that draws the audience to his films.
As it is evident from the above the longevity of an actor’s honeymoon with the audience is guided also by the dialogues that he mouths on the screen. One only hopes that DON-2 would keep the spirit alive and even Aamir Khan would take a cue and get a dialogue for himself that would define his character in a particular film, and would become his signature announcement for all times to come.
