VIDYA BALAN in THE DIRTY PICTURE
Entertainment, entertainment and entertainment was the buzz word around which the whole idea of THE DIRTY PICTURE was woven around and it has emerged as a punch line for the film, inviting wolf whistles and appreciation. The popularity that the dialogue has attained underlines the premise that a film indeed becomes a real success story if a single dialogue or a punch line catches the imagination of the audience.

It used to be a leit motif of Hindi cinema where dialogues dominated the construct of the picture and ensured repeat crowds. But somehow under the influence of glitz and glamour an important ingredient of cinema, a garnishing that created a sense of uniqueness around the character lost out. No wonder the films were flopping dime a dozen, on the other hand, films which had powerful dialogues were lapped up by the audience.

THE DIRTY PICTURE has again harked upon and built up nostalgia around movie viewing and it provides perfect opportunity to undertake a trip down memory lane through the immortal dialogues of Hindi cinema. A caveat needs to be introduced here however, it in the form of the fact that element of immortality is more a glue that is associated with films of the yore than of the present times.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI: It seems Ekta Kapoor has turned a new leaf through dialogues, as it was the dialogues of ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI per se that made the film such a huge hit.

SINGHAM: Ajay Devgn riding piggy back on action and dialogues gave one of the humungous hits of 2011, SINGHAM, and its dialogue, “Ye gaon mera hai aur mai iska SINGHAM” and “Aaata Majhi satakli” still continue to reverberate as statements of assertion in the country side.

SHOLAY: It was the first film in the history of Hindi cinema whose audio cassettes of dialogues sold like a hot cake and had created a new vertical for the audio cassette making industry, but as the dialogues petered out so did this vertical. SHOLAY’s “Kitne Aadmi The”, without any dissent is an time best dialogue of the film. No wonder a tribute to the dialogue was given in ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE.

MUGHAL-E-AZAM: In the wake of the success of dialogues of SHOLAY, dialogues of MUGHAL-E-AZAM were also released and the audience just lapped it up. The most famous dialogue in roaring voice of Prithvi Raj Kapoor, “Shekhu”, still is a punch line to try to bring a recalcitrant son back to norms.

ANAND: For a family film the dialogue uttered by Rajesh Khanna, first spoken by Johny Walker though in the film, “Zindagi aur maut upar waale ke haath hai jahapenah…” made the climax of the film humane.

SHEHANSHAH: Amitabh Bachchan’s meteoric rise in his career has been thanks mainly to the dialogues that he uttered in his films which drew wolf whistles and claps, and his dialogue “Rishte mein to hum tumhare baap hote hain aur naam hai SHEHANSHAH”, still brings back memories of the times when Big B was the king and his dialogues instructions to his audience to come and view the film.

ZANZEER: The film which gave angry young man to Hindi cinema in form of Big B also had punch line of dialogues like  “Ye ghar tumhare baap ka nahi hai” and “Ilaka bhi tumhara hai aur wardi bhi nahi hai” which made it such a hit.

The list of such films can go on, but the moot point is that dialogues indeed have been the catalyst in making a film hit at the box office.
