KARAN JOHAR
WE ARE FAMILY could not make waves at the cinema halls in the manner in which its original version STEP MOM had rocked the world. Now Karan Johar has aired the view that he had to adapt STEP MOM as there is acute paucity of good story writers in India. Well, it is a statement that is loaded, as the quality of writers is not the problem, the problem is the lack of connect between good writers and established producers. The layers of control that exist, and the barrier that a new writer has to pass through, makes it indeed a tough job to reach a good producer. The benchmark of writing is manifest from the number of books and the number of new authors that are getting published these days. The moot point is that one has to expand the horizon, and look for the content outside the area in which one operates; the regional writing is one such area which is proliferating.

If Karan Johar is indeed looking for content, then here is a content that he could think about developing as a story, and he would have Big B in the film without any questions being asked.

The story under question is the efforts that Big B's father Harivansh Rai Bachchan had made to get a spy released from Pakistan. Harivansh Rai Bachchan had adopted a family in Ferozpur in Punjab and used to write regular letters to them. Senior Bachchan had adopted the family of Mohan Lal Bhaskar as his "god-gifted" brother. Mohan Lal Bhaskar was a fiery poet, who on being prodded by a defense personnel had agreed to become a spy for India and came back from Pakistan six times, before being caught the seventh time. It was then that Harivansh Rai Bachchan started his efforts to get Bhaskar released. Senior Bachchan had taken the matter with the then Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi and her good offices were used to get Bhaskar released.

The whole process has been preserved through a series of letters, and it could be a novel way to present the content in a cinematic format, may be Abhishek Bachchan could be the spy and Big B could play the role of his father.

The content has all the melodrama, excitement, rush of adrenalin everything that the cinematic fan aspires for within the fore walls of a cinema hall, when the reels start unspooling. It is also a part of history, and is one such instance. The instances are flying in the air, one only indeed has to look beyond the known to get the content that would mesmerize and captivate the audience.
