There has been really something associated with Hindi Cinema when it revisits the annals of friendship, especially among the youth and tries to use it as the platform to tell a story. KAI PO CHE! is the latest addition to this saga where the whole story has been constructed through the trials and tribulations that the three friends face in life, and using them as the prop the dilemmas that the youth of the present times face has been brought out in succinct detail. On the eve of release of KAI PO CHE! here is a re-look at the films which have used the trials and tribulations of the youth as the subject matter of content:
MERE APNE: It was Gulzar who for the first time in all probability brought to the silver screen the sense of hopelessness the youth of the times are besotted with, with nobody ready to provide them any guidance and they all experimenting legally or illegally the paths to find moorings in their life.
ANKUSH: It was a vintage N Chandra film, which was able to portray the angst of the youth whose parents might have lived in slums, and the group of friends after having grown up, the dilemma of existence that they face, the aspiration to break the shackle, it was a film that though focused on youth of Mumbai touched the chord of youth all over the country.
ARJUN: Those were the days when Rahul Rawail had the pulse of audience and the frustration of group of friends, who are not able to break past the system as it thrived on sycophancy and nepotism was the theme, and it was one of the biggest hit films in Rahul Rawail’s career.
RANG DE BASANTI: Another iconic film of the previous decade, which became pan-Indian hit as it was able to encapsulate the dilemma that the youth of the country face when they are growing up, and also underlines the fact that if the youth are given a meaning for their life, they would leave no stone unturned to achieve the goal. It is the latent energy in the youth that has to be harnessed. RDB became a watershed movie as far as leading protest was concerned, as thenceforth candle marches as a sign of protest became a sine qua non.
DIL CHAHTA HAI: It is not that only the youth who belong to the middle and lower middle class of the society faces a dilemma of growing up, the same is also faced by the youth of the upper strata of the society. It is just that the manifestation of dilemma may have different connotations, as it was in DIL CHAHTA HAI and it was the primary reasons how it became such a roaring hit.
3 IDIOTS: The film emerged as the cult movie that was based on the simple premise that one should dream, and do not let anything come in between, it also had a stark message for the teaching fraternity as well, that they should not encourage teaching by rote but encourage those who think out of the box.
MAACHIS: When the impressionable minds get indoctrinated through the catalysis of religion, the havoc it reaps was the theme of Gulzar’s another milestone film, which tried to focus on how scores of youth of Punjab during the times of terrorism were misled, is another cult movie that focused on the fact that if youth are not given proper direction, they could indeed go off-track.
ROCK ON: Abhishek Kapoor, tested the manner in which friendships evolve through ROCK ON, where music was the bond between the friends, and though the friends had drifted apart and moved on in their lives, it was music that brought them back again and became the catalyst to ignite the bonding of the past. ROCK ON caught the imagination of the country as it was the first film during its time in all probability which used music as the binding element among friends, underlining the fact that music indeed is the soothing balm that has the overriding power to dissolve all form of dissents.
Indeed, KAI PO CHE! has also tried to bring into relief of religion as a factor that at times affects the process of thinking of youth. One hopes that KAI PO CHE! also joins the list of cult films which have tried to address the problems of youth.
