LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA

It indeed is one of the apparent paradoxes that though as a nation we have one of the most delectable cuisines which the world salivates about, the passion associated with the process of food eating, or picking up a cuisine and build up a story around it has never been an area that has been delved into. But with LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA, directed by Sameer Sharma the scenario should change. Sameer Sharma honed his teeth in Hindi cinema under the tutelage of Yash Raj films, where he was the assistant director for DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAENGE and after that he wrote quite a lot of films including BHOOT and SWADES.

LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA basically is a story about the favorite bird up-North called as Kukkad or the chicken, and the quest is to find the perfect recipe, which Mister Khurana, the lead character has, and how everybody tries to patio him to get the recipe. LSTCK marks the return of Vinod Nagpal, aka Basesar Ram of HUM LOG fame to the world of Hindi cinema after a really long time. Kunal Kapoor has been paired opposite Huma Qureshi; LSTCK has been produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Anurag Kashyap and Siddharth Rai Kapoor. It is the third offering from the team that gave us KHOSLA KA GHOSLA and DEV D.

LSTCK was earlier being made as a Punjabi film, but when Anurag Kashyap came on board, he implored upon Sameer Sharma to make it into a full length Hindi feature film. The film has been shot on locations in Ludhiana. Quite a lot of homework has been undertaken to the profession of cooking and offering it commercially, and it has helped that Sharma had worked earlier in his father’s eatery in South Africa.

In a subtle manner LSTCK also is a pointer to the fact that those who have migrated to foreign should think about options to come back as the families that they left behind may have had a treasure house of knowledge that could be turned into a money making proposition, it also being the theme of LSTCK. Kunal Kapoor who had earlier in his life run away to London comes back to find that his grandfather had a recipe about chicken that could be a manna from the heaven.

The stories have not been built around food and food habits probably owing to the fact that food is such an integral part of our live and it is so much nuanced that people may be shuddering to use it as a base to build up a story. After all, in our country a rumour about the bullet being coated with cow’s meat was the trigger for ushering in the first war of Independence in our country. The passing of the chapattis was construed as a sign of conforming to an order for a cause.

Food whenever, so far, has been used as a subject matter in Hindi cinema, has been used as a trigger to generate humour. Who would forget the fat child from BOMBAY TO GOA, whose only bellow in the movie was – Khana. It was a trigger to generate humour, or for that matter the famous cake scene that Manmohan Desai had used in NASEEB. In RANG DE BASANTI as well, Kirron Kher used to run a Dhaba but it was never used as the central part of content build up for the film. With LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA one only hopes that more such films would be on offer, especially that of legendary fights between Mohan Bagan and East Bengal in Kolkata and the kind of fishes that they prefer. Content associated with food could be another vertical whose time seems to be just round the corner.
