Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade Editorial
Just three days after Diwali for the first time in India motor sports would make its debut in India and for scores of film stars; in particular for Shah Rukh Khan it must be an exhilarating moment that the advent of motor sports has become a reality in India. After all his first major box office success BAAZIGAR was a film that was set on the racing track. May be, therefore it indeed was poetic justice that he was associated with its pre-launch in Delhi, it is altogether a different matter that he forgot the name being given to the circuit in India when Big B had asked him the question in KBC.
As the motor car sports race would unfold on the Indian soil, here is an opportunity to run through such films that have been made with car race as the background.
TA RA RUM PUM: Saif Ali Khan as the race driver suffering memory lapses while driving the car in the race track and eventually becoming a cab driver to eke out his living but again returning back to the track to relive his glory was the highlight of the film.
RAM AUR SHYAM: For a change, it was Dilip Kumar who was associated with a car racing sequence in Hindi cinema with RAM AUR SHYAM. It is altogether a different matter that the cars in the film were of standard make.
APRADH: It was the first real film that had a car race as a background and was shot by Feroze Khan in locations around the world and it gave the viewers a glimpse of adventure associated with car racing.
KASME VAADE: Even a Big B was a part of the car race in this film in his second role with Amjad Khan playing the role of Zuda. One does not know whether the famous car race film of FAST AND FURIOUS-2 was inspired by KASME VAADE as the kind of stunts that are shown in this Hollywood film were a part and parcel of KASME VAADE.
CHALTI KA NAAM GADI: It was the first film in the Hindi cinema that used car race as a back drop to bring in rush of adrenalin with all the elements of comedy thrown into it, and the sheer elixir of even old model cars burning the tyres on the road made the audience drool in excitement, and the excitement still enthralls.
RACE: Car race and murder mystery, the success formula that Abbas Mastan arrived at with BAAZIGAR found another manifestation in RACE where the tracks of South Africa were used as an interesting backdrop to underline the romance of car racing.
SHAITAN: It was another film which underlined the recklessness of the youth and the limits to which they are pushed when they do not conduct the life as per the norms of the society and the fall outs associated with it.
One only hopes that once the motor sports circuit becomes a reality within a matter of five days it would also encourage Hindi film makers to shoot more films in India using this circuit as a backdrop and may be Shah Rukh Khan could take the lead in it.
