ROCKSTAR and revival of portrait style presentation on posters

RANBIR KAPOOR in ROCKSTAR
ROCKSTAR poster that adorned the walls of the country as also the cinema halls had an interesting paradigm shift. Here it needs to be underlined that one is talking of the common posters of 3x1 feet so. The paradigm shift that was attempted through ROCKSTAR in posters was to paint portrait of the lead actors Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakri on the poster, it not having any connect with the picture in actuality.

Indeed, this was how posters of cinema were designed, more in the form of a portrait, a stylization whose tradition was initiated by the likes of Maqbool Fida Hussain. He would indeed be more than happy to see that his earlier style of painting, portrait form for film posters is making a comeback (Hussain started his career in painting by painting posters of cinema on to walls and hoardings). Wheel is reinventing so to say, as the film posters of the country were more in the nature of portraits rather than being drawn through the aide of computer graphics. Computer graphics presented a sanitized kind of an ambience to the poster, but the hand painted posters brings out a certain sense of enigma associated with the stars of the movie.

Could it be also on account of the fact that the hand painted posters have a big market which does not exist for the posters that are design with the technical aides. Indeed, if one were to traverse Bhendi Bazaar area in Mumbai or Chandni Chowk in Delhi one would find the aficionados searching for posters and paying astronomical prize to possess them. Creating history of films from posters is indeed an area of research that has come into vogue recently and one of the publishers has come out with a book tracing the history of Indian cinema through posters. As a matter of fact recently NFDC organized such event where vintage posters were on display and few posters were on offer for sale as well.

As a matter of fact there is one coffee shop in tony shopping place in Greater Kailash in Delhi, named Chal Chitra Café which has amazing collection of posters and other such memorabilia and one can take a trip down memory lane of film history while sipping a cup of coffee. It is quite a favorite with the young crowd underlining the fact that indeed if one wants to curate a vertical based on the posters of cinema; it indeed has very bright future.

May be, the trend that has been revived by ROCKSTAR once again would continue to prosper and proliferate and not be one off instance.
