It indeed is one of the apparent paradoxes that when one talks about the teachers' day, one fondly remembers all the teachers who have been the source of inspiration in an individual's journey from nobody to somebody, however nowhere does one talk about the first teacher in a child's life, i.e. the mother. Is mother not the first teacher for a child, who prepares the child to step into the haloed portals of a school, but even the child, forgets or is doctored in such a manner to forget that mother indeed is the first teacher who holds hands of the child and prepares him to graduate into the harsh world?
This being the premise, it would be interesting to search about such films where the role of mothers has been such that it is worthy than that of the teachers.
MOTHER INDIA: The first film that would head the list from this perspective would be MOTHER INDIA where a mother when she observes that her child is going astray and is not adhering to the principals of teaching that she has imparted, is ready to shoot the child as well. Would a teacher have such a conviction to do it with his student, not likely, as a teacher has whole bunch of students to cater to while a mother has two-three children.
DEEWAR: Again one of the monumental roles of mother etched in the history of Hindi cinema who questions the child about the teachings that she ingrained in him and whether he has been a worthy student to practice those principals in life, a teacher also does the same thing with a student, a kind of introspective perspective. But when a mother does it, the element of poignancy becomes more so pronounced.
ANARI: Mrs. Teesa of ANARI was indeed a mother who was bred into the nuances of modern city, a typical convent school teacher who taught the virtues of righteousness to a errant boy Raj Kapoor and if one needs to learn a lesson one of how to conduct oneself in day-to-day life, one need not go much far, than revisit ANARI, more so those who want to live a dignified life in a megapolis like Mumbai.
MAINE PYAAR KIYA: Reema Lagoo as the mother of Salman Khan in this film was another such role that had an element of imparting world wisdom to the child, Salman Khan. No wonder, in self doubt when the child Salman Khan asks Reema Lagoo whether he is correct or not and she approves it, it indeed is the defining moment for Salman to implement the teachings taught by her mother.
World of Hindi cinema is replete with such examples, it only is to be emphasized and underlined that in fact for a child the mother is the best teacher and subsequently other teachers evolve and warm up to their roles in life.
