Finally Hindi cinema seems to be coming off age, as it has decided to demystify the enigma around popular characters of cinematic oeuvre of our country, and it has taken an Ekta Kapoor to undertake this initiative with one of the most colorful characters of cinema Silk Smitha. One may have an opinion about the title of the film, THE DIRTY PICTURE, but the choice of title of the film seems to be guided by the fact that the name of Silk Smitha in Tamil Cinema was associated with raunchiness, and at the times when she flourished, having more market value than the mainstream heroines of Tamil Cinema, she was associated with raunchiness and titillation.
Those were the times when the female actors maintained a coy persona and the element of sexiness was injected into the films through the likes of Silk Smitha in South Indian cinema. She also had displayed her histrionics in SADMA, along with Kamal Hassan and had displayed with conviction that she was not only an object of titillation, but she had a substance as a performer. Therefore, Vidya Balan playing the role of Silk Smitha is the perfect choice as she has demonstrated with conviction that when it comes to enactment of eroticism and sexiness on the screen she is a mean customer as she displayed it with her performance in ISHQIYA.
To add element of authenticity to the era being created, Bappi Lahiri has been brought back as a music director, to create the ambience of eighties when Bappi Lahiri ruled cinema with his own style of music. Success of Silk Smitha lay in the fact that she confirmed to the notion of beauty as it was described in the classical treatise of Indian history, not a chiseled figure, but a figure that was pleasantly plump in required proportions, and factoring in this premise, Vidya Balan is the perfect choice to enact her role in THE DIRTY PICTURE, as she has the classical old looks of the era gone by.
Importance of Silk Smitha lay in her fact that she along with Nylon Laxmi etc. all carved a distinct niche for themselves by using their sexuality in the era when cinema of South was dominated by male actors and the female co-stars did not have a substantial role to play.
One only hopes that now that Ekta Kapoor has taken the lead to make a biopic on the life of Silk Smitha through THE DIRTY PICTURE, she would one day also make a film on the life of Helen as she is one of the most important muses of Hindi cinema. Whenever Ekta Kapoor decided to do it, she would not have to look much further than using Jerry Pinto’s book on Helen as a veritable source.
