Tragic lives of Heroines: Hindi cinema's adoption from the past

Thursday, September 8, 2011 7:06:55 PM (IST) | Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade Editorial

Hindi cinema seems to be on the experimentation stage as far as content of the films is concerned. Now it has turned new leaf in adopting the characters of film actors, female at that, from the past to adopt them from past. Here is a look at these initiatives.

The first pictures that have been released for Milan Luthria's film THE DIRTY PICTURE, based on the life of yesterday sex siren of the South Silk Smitha, the role being enacted by Vidya Balan has already started making waves. The waves being made are in connection with the sexy, sultry, bindass getup that Vidya Balan has adopted for THE DIRTY PICTURE, showing ample cleavage and come hither look, it has left the tongues of the critics wagging. Vidya Balan seems to have started from where she left off in ISHQIYA. THE DIRTY PICTURE provides her an opportunity to tell the fans and the film makers that indeed she also has oodles of talent to promote and project the image of a sexy siren, which can set the screen on fire.

HEROINE: Kareena Kapoor
HEROINE being made by Madhur Bhandarkar which was supposed to star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but now being replaced by Kareena Kapoor as Aishwarya has proceeded on maternity leave is the film based supposedly on the life of Marylyn Monroe. One only hopes that in HEROINE Madhur Bhandarkar comes out with some innovative camera work instead of copying the scene of skirt flowing from below above the head, an act which had made Marylyn Monroe famous all over the world.

If there is one director who has highlighted the tragedy of film actors associated with him in different stages of his life, it is Mahesh Bhatt, who through series of films has brought out in succinct detail the pain and the pathos that the heroines had to undergo.

WOH LAMHE: Kangana Ranaut
Mahesh Bhatt is one actor who has drawn inspiration from his life, and WOH LAMHE was the latest screen adoption of the affair that Mahesh Bhatt had with Parveen Babi, Kangana Ranaut playing the role of Parveen Babi. The film had quite a lot of passionate moments.

Like Mahesh Bhatt, Shyam Benegal is another director who has chosen the famous performance characters from the past, associated with performing art as a subject for his films.

BHUMIKA: Smita Patil
Based on the life of the famous Marathi Danseuse, Hansa Wadekar, who led a flamboyant and controversial life, it was one of the finest performances enacted by Smita Patil. One wonders at times, whether Smita Patil had imbibed some of the traits of Hansa Wadekar in her personal life as well. BHUMIKA had underlined in succinct detail how a female actor had to face the exploitation in the world of performing arts, and she can use her gender to her advantage to wriggle out of the situations.

ZUBEIDA: Karisma Kapoor
ZUBEIDA again was a film based on the life of actor by the same name that was passionate about acting in cinema but fearing the opprobrium from her family did not reveal her true identity. In ZUBEIDA Shyam Benegal had also sensitively handled the romance between a Muslim girl and a Hindu boy rather well, a fact which was an integral part of the royalty of the era gone by. The clash of cultures, formulations associated with cultures, etc., where etched out in beautiful detail by Shyam Benegal.

One only hopes that after the release of THE DIRTY PICTURE more directors would be inspired to make films based on the lives of male film stars, as so far no such attempt has been made by Hindi cinema.
