SON OF SARDAAR and JAB TAK HAI JAAN

Ajay Devgn has rightly said that the role that Sanjay Dutt did in SON OF SARDAR could not have been done by any other actor, after all, it was a performance that was kind of a Bhishma Pitamah type of role, an oath that had been taken and had to be lived up to for the sake of family pride.

What has been a catalyst in making SON OF SARDAR a super hit film is its emphasis on the values, ethos, family pride and the importance that family has in facilitating the family values. What has also not been talked about is the role given to Tanuja and Juhi Chawla in the film that has bought female fans in a big way to make SON OF SARDAR.

While Juhi Chawla as a chirpy bride is ready to abide and facilitate the vow taken by her husband Sanjay Dutt not to enter into the process of marriage, it is the character played by Tanuja as the half-senile woman who orders Sanjay Dutt to forget the family feud and let bygones be bygones underlines the important role that women continue to play in the family of initiating moves and processes to see to it that the family remains united.

As a side light it also needs to be emphasized that oath has played an important part in JAB TAK HAI JAAN as well, where a Katrina Kaif decides not to kiss Shah Rukh Khan but when she meets her mother and understands the outreach of love she lets her resolve go away. In the same manner she also resolves to forget SRK when he meets with a serious accident and she does adhere to it.

It again is an apparent paradox inherent in the world of cinema that while the characters of elderly women as etched in cinema is that which is tottering at the margins, she draws immense power from her character to change the tide of things, but it seldom does happen in the real life.

It is also one of the apparent contradictions that while the average movie goer laps up the movie which underlines and emphasizes the role of culture and values, he does not strive to stand up to it and imbibe it in his day to day life. May be the fantasy unspooled on his within the darkness of the silver screen creates for him the situation of ideology, but the harsh realities of the life as he steps out after the film has come to an end, force him to leave ideologies aside to eke out living.

It is the importance of oath in life which has been emphasized in both JTHJ and SOS that has indeed been a catalyst in making these Hindi films a super hit.
