Apart from FIRE IN THE BLOOD, a feature length documentary by Dylan Mohan Gray, the World Documentary Competition line up of the 2013 edition of Sundance Film Festival includes another film on an Indian subject. It’s an UK/India co-production.
The film is directed by Kim Longinotto a very well-known British documentary filmmaker who is known to make films on the plight of female victims of oppression and discrimination. And here is the most important trivia about her. She is the documentary filmmaker who made a film in 2010, titled PINK SARIS. The film was based on Gulabi Gang led by Sampat Pal Devi, who brought her own brand of justice to the streets of Bundelkhand, UP, India, and combating violence against women. The Bollywood feature film GULAB GANG, the come back film of Madhuri Dikshit, produced by Anubhav Sinha, is based on the same subject.
Kim Longinotto latest film is about a young Muslim girl named Salma, who lives in South India and how as she reaches puberty, her parents lock her away. Twenty-five years later, Salma fights her way back to the outside world. SALMA brings into focus the fate of millions of such girls all over the world. The film will have its world premiere at Sundance 2013.
