JOHN DAY

They’ve used the name of A WEDNESDAY this Friday to tell us about the producers of JOHNDAY. But not every Johnny can make A WEDNESDAY!

Debutante director Ahishor Solomon, however, crackles in the first 45 minutes, setting up the plot to a nicety, building scenes and sequences giving one a sense of a slick-thriller.

Unfortunately, his characters [and their motives] that follow fail to link convincingly to the preamble, thus making the entire exercise crumble like a pack of cards. It gets tedious just watching an ACP vent out his childhood fury on those who come in his line of wanting to make money.

Even Johnday (Naseeruddin Shah) going about like a maniac with vengeance is not convincing along with the robbery in the bank where he is the manager. ‘Casablanca’ is a nice name used to peg the happenings, but even the file bearing that name lying in the locker was no motive for robbery! They just came for jewellery!!

Gautam (Randeep Hooda) we learn is an ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police). He wears stylish tight jeans, and flaunts sunglasses and a permanent scowl. The only link to him doing police duty is Shinde (Vipin Sharma), a corrupt police officer. We learn that Shinde joined the police force impressed after watching ZANJEER (not last week’s release).

As for Gautam, his excessive violence is linked to his orphaned past and sexual abuse. So he takes his revenge by getting violent, buoyed by his designation. But not once is he shown inside a police station or reporting to anyone above him, or even having simple respect for the police force. If he wants a naka bandi, he dials Shinde, who obliges immediately. I really don’t know if this is the normal process. What if Shinde was off-duty?

Two years after Johnday’s daughter, Pearl, dies, while out on a holiday with her boyfriend (she had mentioned to her father that she was going out with her school friends) JohnDay stumbles on some facts that led to her death. He changes gear from a God-fearing man to one out to seek revenge.

Surely, JohnDay would have found one God-fearing man within the system to hand over damning documents that would open a can of worms.

Solomon selectively uses passages from Psalm 73 (The Holy Bible), while ignoring the final verse, which puts the entire prayer in perspective (“But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, to tell of all your works.”)

Every Word of God is linked to a liberating truth. “Only the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Rating - 2/5
