AKSHAY KUMAR and KATRINA KAIF IN TEES MAAR KHAN
Bollywood's fascination with con artists is growing stronger by the day. BLUFFMASTER, BUNTY AUR BABLI and OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE are the prominent ones that come to mind. TEES MAAR KHAN is another addition to the con caper list.

Director Farah Khan repeats her film within a film act of OM SHANTI OM in TEES MAAR KHAN. This is the third movie of Farah Khan (MAIN HOON NA, OM SHANTI OM) and the first one without her blue-eyed boy, Shahrukh Khan. Seen in films like NAMASTEY LONDON, WELCOME, SINGH IS KINNG and DE DANA DAN, the successful pair of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif team up yet again in TMK. The buzz of the film is pretty strong due to heavy promotions, with Sheila ki Jawani already being a chart buster.

TMK is the story of Tabrez Mirza Khan aka Tees Maar Khan (Akshay Kumar), who had such a huge impact of his mother watching criminal movies when he was in her womb, that he starts stealing things from the day he is born. Along with his gang members Dollar, Soda and Burger, he can steal anything and everything with brazen audacity. Even the police find it impossible to keep him ensnared for long. Anya (Katrina Kaif) is his dumb girlfriend, who wants to be a top actress.

One day, international antique smugglers, the conjoined Johri brothers (Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman) assign him a task to rob antiques worth 500 crore rupees from a heavily guarded moving train. Is he able to carry off this humongous heist is what ensues.

TMK starts off on a rocking note with Tees Maar Khan's neat escape from a moving plane. His quaint mannerisms make the first half a fun ride. Farah Khan's slapstick comedy is alluring in the beginning but fizzles out as the film progresses. Post the interval, Farah Khan loses it, as the narrative drags. Just when the rudderless film, Bharat ka Khazana'that Tees Maar Khan shoots, TMK loses its own direction.

The film isn't exactly unbearable, but falls way short of expectations. Without a strong plot, one at least expects the gags to be funny but they are far from it and few in number. Even the dialogues by Shirish Kunder are unappealing. Copious lines like 'Tube se nikla toothpaste aur Tees Maar Khan ki zubaan, dono wapas nahin jate get prosaic and add to your woes. Music by Vishal-Shekhar and Shirish Kunder is mediocre with Sheila ki Jawani being the only good track.

It has some uproarious moments like the Bin khopdi ka bhoot track and Atish Kapoor (Akshaye Khanna) constant desperation to bag an Oscar Award. But the digs taken at Aamir Khan, Manoj Bajpayee and Danny Denzongpa are certainly below the belt.

Akshay Kumar plays his role well. But he has nothing new to offer as we have seen him playing several similar roles in the past. Katrina Kaif plays a wannabe actress to perfection and completely sizzles in Sheila ki Jawani. Akshaye Khanna is brilliant. It's actually good seeing him overact as his role demanded that. Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman don't have much to do. Salman Khan's guest appearance in Wallah re wallah is first-rate. Chunky Pandey is hilarious. Arya Babbar is decent. Ali Asgar is passable. All the other actors play their part well.

TEES MAAR KHAN ends with a song called 'Happy Ending' in which many cast and crew members receive Oscars. Well, it isn't such a happy ending for you as a viewer. The con job goes wrong mid way, after an impressive start.

Rating: 2.5/5
