AAKROSH makers: So what, even OMKARA was 'A'

AKSHAYE KHANNA AND AJAY DEVGAN IN AAKROSH
When AAKROSH was presented before the Censor board, there was a laundry list of cuts that were suggested for this Priyadarshan film. Since the film makes a direct reference to honour killings in various parts of the country and also brings with it a strong undertone of religion and political violence coupled with raw language, AAKROSH was adjudged to be unsuitable for children.

"They wanted us to make more than a dozen odd cuts due to the factors you mention. If we would have consented to that, AAKROSH would have got a U/A certificate", confirms producer Kumar Mangat, "However, we couldn't agree on this. If we would have introduced those cuts, the core essence of the film would have been lost. How could we have afforded to do that? There was no sense at all because the purpose of making this film was to expose the harsh reality of our society rather than delivering a sugar coated feel good message."

After quite some deliberation, there was a middle road taken with the Censors reducing its demands for cuts and the makers too agreeing for an 'A' certificate.

"It was not the best case scenario but still, given the circumstances, it is okay. Now there are only 3-4 cuts in the film but we are happy that we didn't have to compromise with the flavour of the film. In any case, my OMKARA too was given an 'A' certificate by the censor board for its language, violence and explicit scenes. The film was a critical as well as commercial success and today is hailed as a cult film. Such films find their target audience by themselves so I am not worried."

AAKROSH stars Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu and Paresh Rawal in principal roles with Reema Sen and Amita Pathak as strong supporting characters. Sameera Reddy has also been roped in for a special item number which has been put to tune by Pritam. The film releases all over this Friday.
