Audience says 'no' to big and reputed filmmakers!

Wednesday, December 08, 2010 7:15:17 PM (IST) | Abid, Bollywood Trade Editorial

Rating:
Shocking it may sound but it is quite apparent that in just a matter of a few weeks the audience has outrightly rejected highly hyped and ambitious projects by renowned filmmakers.

Starting with the Diwali weekend release, ACTION REPLAYY,   starring undoubtedly one of the top stars of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the film was directed by top filmmaker Vipul Shah with whom Akshay has previously given a hat trick of successes in form of AANKHEIN, WAQT-RACE AGAINST TIME and NAMASTEY LONDON. ACTION REPLAYY was expected to carry forward the excellent track record of the actor-director duo but unfortunately the audience simply refused to  come out and the film turned out to be  a commercial failure.

Then came Sanjay Leela Bhansali's GUZAARISH. Starring the winning 'jodi' of super hero Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (who share an excellent track record  in the form of DHOOM 2 and JODHAA AKBAR), the film failed to impress the audience and has turned out to be a failure. Once again a top filmmaker like Sanajy Leela Bhansali got rejected by the paying audience.

Perhaps the most shocking was the failure of Ashutosh Gowariker's period film, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SE. The film starring the hot and happening Abhishek Bachchan and the sensational Deepika Padukone was expected to be another winner for Gowariker, who is  a top producer-director, and after LAGAAN and JODHAA AKBAR,  proved that period and historical films were his forte. However the poor start that the film has taken (both in India and abroad), with not much improvement during the weekend (despite some good reviews and positive WOM), the film is most likely to end up as a losing proposition for all concerned.

However all is not lost, with two big filmmakers, Anees Bazmee with NO PROBLEM (which releases next Friday) and Farah Khan's TEES MAAR KHAN still to hit the screens, we hope that the tide is turned once again in favour of the reputed makers.
