DEPARTMENT to be different from Salman, Ajay, Akki cop dramas

SANJAY DUTT, RANA GAGGUBATI and AMITABH BACHCHAN
What's common between DABANGG and SINGHAM? Well, other than the fact that they have been action entertainers that went on to do a business of over 100 crore each, they also featured Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn as the lead protagonists who were cops. With veteran hero Sanjay Dutt pairing up with relative newbie Rana Daggubati for DEPARTMENT, one wonders what would be the kind of route that the film would take, especially since it comes from Ram Gopal Varma stable.

'When you would see DEPARTMENT, you would realise how there are so many incidents in the film that would seem to have been extracted from real life around us. There is lot more reality on display in DEPARTMENT that makes it different from a SINGHAM or a DABANGG. In fact there is no comparison whatsoever,' says a source.

Meanwhile cop dramas are pretty much turning out to be the flavour of the season with Aamir Khan (DHUAAN), Akshay Kumar (ROWDY RATHORE), John Abraham (FORCE) and Abhishek Bachchan (DHOOM 3) joining the club as well.

However Rana had his own reasons to step into the film since he felt that DEPARTMENT gave him an ideal opportunity to balance experimentation with commercial cinematic appeal.

'In fact this is what attracted me to the film as well because there was this strong feeling of something that was really happening amidst us,' says Rana who made an impressive debut early this year in DUM MAARO DUM, 'We have taken a line which is totally different from other quintessential masala flicks. Still, our film is as commercial as it gets.'

With Amitabh Bachchan towering the case, DEPARTMENT also stars Anjana Sukhani and is over 50% complete. The film is expected to release in first half of 2012.
