Film festivals are great platforms for showing movies, say women filmmakers

Women directors from different countries on Thursday said that film festivals provide a great platform to showcase movies.
Director of AGLAYA Krisztina Deak, director Filiz Alpgezmen, producer of THE STRANGER Eylem Akin, director of ‘THE SECRET OF THE ANT CHILDREN Christine Francois and director of NARCISSUS Dovile Gasiunaite interacted with the media in Goa.
AGLAYA, the Hungarian-Romanian-German-English movie skillfully interweaves the Hungarian family drama with a loss-of-innocence fairy tale. Touching on themes of abandonment and the break-up of the family unit with consummate grace the film balances its moments of sadness with sparklingly colourful images. Interacting with the media, Krisztina Deak stated that even though she doesn’t consider herself as a feminist she prefers to do women-centric movies.
French movie THE SECRET OF ANT CHILDREN is both an account of maternal devotion and a denunciation of ritual infanticide. Director Christine Francois said the film is based on true facts and non-professional, amateur actors have performed in the movie. She said that the purpose of the movie was to spread awareness about infanticide and hoped that with her film, women in Benin would get voice to speak against infanticide and child sorcery.
NARCISSUS, the Lithuanian-English movie is about a gifted string quartet cello player who abandons his family, career and friends in his quest for a true challenge only to find out that his greatest confrontation will be with himself.
Director Dovile Gasiunaite said that it is not right to differentiate between male and female directors since both have similar approach towards the craft of film making. She further said that her goal is to reach audience who understand her movies and not sell as many tickets as possible.
The Turkish-French film THE STRANGER is about Ozgur, who is born and raised in Paris but has roots in Turkey.
Speaking about her movie director Filiz Alpgezmen stated that she made a woman centric movie since women get deeply affected by social change than men.
It is an advantageous being a woman director since they handle the emotional side of the subject in a better manner, she added.
Speaking about the how their movies are received in their respective countries, all the directors stated that Hollywood movies always scored over local language movies.
They rued the lack of audience and market for meaningful, non-commercial cinema and agreed that film festivals is the right and great platform for showing their movies.
