Fox Star’s Vijay Singh talks of ‘Islamic Opportunity’ for Bollywood films at FICCI FRAMES 2011

Rating:
Vijay Singh, the CEO of Fox Star Studios, made this revelation in a session titled ‘Making Cinema with Global Appeal: A Session with the Stalwarts’. The session was moderated by Suhel Seth of Counselage India.

Dr. Kamal Hassan delivered the keynote speech and suggested that films more rooted in local culture have greater chances of succeeding globally. Australian director Bill Bennett was the third ‘stalwart’ who participated in the session and talked about how the language of the film can be an important roadblock. While talking about what can really make Indian films globally appealing, Vijay Singh listed out various opportunities that can be exploited successfully by Indian filmmakers, and distributors. He said that Indian films had not been effectively marketed and distributed even among the Indian diaspora that is spread over 65 countries. He was drawing upon his experience of successfully taking MY NAME IS KHAN to the overseas territories and how the film had collected more than USD 25 Million by reaching out to these hitherto unexploited markets. He introduced the phrase ‘Islamic Opportunity’ in his discourse. He was actually referring to the vast market potential for Indian films in the Islamic world. He felt that Bollywood films appeal to the sensibilities of this market and here lies an opportunity to expand the reach of Indian cinema beyond our shores.

He also said that art-house films would only have niche audiences that have ‘art house sensibilities’ who prefer to ‘discover’ this kind of cinema instead of being told about it through a massive marketing campaign. When asked if he could name any of the Indian films that could have been marketed more successfully around the globe as world cinema, he mentioned BANDIT QUEEN as one such film.
