Guneet Monga is the much sought after and respected film producer who offers succor, solace, and solid support to passionate Indian filmmakers with breakthrough ideas. The international film trade and industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter (THR) celebrated women like her through a special edition of ‘Women in Entertainment’ breakfast in Los Angeles, on December 5, 2012.
‘Women in Entertainment’ is a platform for women to come together to recognize their achievements, celebrate their heroes and inspire the next generation of leaders, an event that also sees a global press coverage. The selections were based on the following: revenue generated for their companies, valuation of assets, number of employees overseen, influence within the film and television industries, ability to get projects greenlighted or proximity to greenlight power, general standing and reputation within the entertainment community.
Alongside the US-based Power 100 list, the THR team turned the spotlight on outstanding international players this year where Indian producer Guneet Monga of Sikhya Entertainment and Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt Ltd (AKFPL) was featured amongst eleven other women achievers in the entertainment industry from across the globe. The list also includes Neena Lath Gupta, the Managing Director of NFDC.
In an industry that is driven by stars and the 100 crore formulae, Monga is very clear about supporting cinema involving the new talent and edgy projects that the private sector is reluctant to take up. She is actively involved throughout all phases of the film, from its inception and development to completion and delivery where no matter what, she tries to preserve the integrity, voice and vision of the film. She may have taken a route less travelled in India where one may not know what to expect ahead. But despite the struggles she has freed herself from the conformity of the norms in the industry.
Monga has produced and marketed films like Anurag Kashyap's THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR I & II, Vasan Bala's edgy drama PEDDLERS, and Q’s TASHER DESH. KAVI, a short film produced by her was nominated for the Academy Awards in live action category, 2010.
This year has been quite eventful for Monga who has been traveling with her films to prestigious international film festivals. The two part thriller, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR has been selected for three out of the big five (festivals) – Cannes, Toronto (TIFF) and Sundance. She was the first Indian producer to have three of her films (GOW I, GOW II AND PEDDLERS) screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year. She was invited with the Indian delegation at the Marrakech International Film Festival alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Rukh Khan, Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, and others. Her next venture, SHAHID by director Hansal Mehta will be screening at the Dubai International Film Festival this month. The film was recently at TIFF and won an award at MAMI.
Monga is now involved in the production of a range of films that will be seen in the coming year. Some of these are Shlok Sharma’s HAARAMKHOR, Ritesh Batra’s THE LUNCHBOX, a Marathi film called VAKRATUNDA MAHAKAYA by Punar Vasu, TIGERS by the Academy Award-winning Danis Tanovic and Amit Kumar’s MONSOON SHOOTOUT.
