HUMA QURESHI in GANGS OF WASSEYPUR

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s new find Huma Qureshi, who is gearing up for her debut film GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, is having a dream run. With first film making it to Cannes to having cream projects under her belt, she is enjoying every bit of it.

An elated Huma shares the experience of being at Cannes for the first time, “My first film in Cannes…it feels like a dream! It was high and magical moment for me. To bag an Anurag Kashyap film was a cool thing but to have its World Premiere at Cannes was coolest. I was hardly there for 3 days but the kind of special treatment we received was amazing. That was the first time I actually got to know how audience reacts and responds. GANGS received an overwhelming response at Cannes and there was just appreciation, applaud everywhere.”

“All these years we were grew up watching other people at Cannes and discussing about their fashion sense and now when we became a part of it was altogether a different feeling,” adds Huma.

Huma also clears the misconception saying Bollywood has changed with time and it is highly regarded & looked upto in the international market (especially Cannes).

“I don’t agree with the fact that Bollywood has not much respect in Cannes. On the contrary Bollywood has high regard and I really feel proud of it. If you look at Indian Cinema history it’s changing in a very interesting sort of way. All kind of films are doing well. You have a big multi-starrers, starry films, big budgeted films like DABANGG doing well on one side and then you have small films like VCKY DONOR also doing well. Even the mainstream is changing you have a film like ISHAQZAADE, based in the heartlands of India with local language & characters and refreshing starcast, and it is still doing well. It doesn’t have big stars to boast off. So cinema is changing in a delighting way. And it’s not that outside world is not realizing about it. The fact that a film like GANGS OF WASSEYPUR was accepted at Cannes, which is very mainstream & masaldaar film, proves people are accepting it with open arms. Whether it is a film like SLUMDOG or whatever India is in fact the new flavour that people are opening up their eyes. More and more people are showing their acceptance towards Indian Cinema than it was earlier,” Huma says.

Besides GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, Huma has her hands full with other coveted projects like Vishal Bhardwaj’s EK THI DAAYAN starring Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin and Konkona Sharma alongside, Nikhil Advani’s next untitled action film, UTV & Anurag Kashyap’s joint venture LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA.

“EK THI DAAYAN is a supernatural thriller where I am paired opposite Emraan Hashmi. Emraan has a very interesting role in it. While for Nikhil Advani’s action film I have already started taking combat training and I am highly excited about this film. UTV and Anurag’s joint production LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURRANA is India’s first food film. It’s a romantic comedy. Kunal will be seen in interesting avatar,” Huma says.

Anurag Kashyap’s GANGS OF WASSEYPUR is all set to hit the screens on 22nd June 2012.
