SALIM-JAVED

They remain the most successful pair of screen writers in the history of Indian cinema and even Big B gives credit to them for his phenomenal rise to unparalleled stardom. However, very few know about what actually led to their split. If we go by the revelations in Anita Padhye's Marathi book 'Yahi Rang Yahi Roop', it all happened at Big B's Holi party.

As mentioned in the book, after delivering hits with Amitabh Bachchan like ZANJEER and DEEWAR, Salim-Javed had approached Amitabh Bachchan for MR. INDIA, but he declined the offer due to some reason. This didn't go down well with Javed Akhtar who told Salim that they won't be working with Amitabh any more. Salim didn't want such a condition to arise, where they completely stopped working with Amitabh.

After a few days of this talk, Javed Akhtar went to celebrate Holi at Amitabh's house and told him that Salim did not want to work with him. When Javed narrated this incident to Salim, they had an argument over it. Salim was mad about Javed taking his name, when, in fact, it was Javed who had suggested that they stopped working with Amitabh. Three to four months later Javed decided to part ways with Salim, thus ending their long and successful association that had given the industry its first super star and a long list of blockbuster movies.

According to the book, after their split was made public Amitabh Bachchan announced that he would continue to work with Javed Akhtar. Salim Khan was left out in the cold. He went without work for almost four years. Amitabh and Salim never came face to face after AKELA in 1991.

'Yahi Hai Rang Roop' contains many more startling revelations, exploding long held myths, unraveling hitherto unknown side of the Indian film industry and the people who are part of it. It is Anita Padhye's fourth book and features seven personalities - Salim Khan, Shamshad Begum, B.R. Ishara, Nanda, Rajendra Nath, Basu Chaterjee and Mansoor Khan.
