Will ROCKSTAR turn out to be a cult movie?

RANBIR KAPOOR in ROCKSTAR
Director Imtiaz Ali's ROCKSTAR, starring the latest super star of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, is slated to release next Friday and is carrying a good hype. Our reliable sources in the trade are of view that ROCKSTAR will embark on a rocking start.

Given the excitement that the promos of ROCKSTAR and its absolutely scintillating music by the wizard and maestro A.R.Rahman has managed to generate, it's quite easy to predict a very good opening for ROCKSTAR. But let's go one step further and analyze whether ROCKSTAR will turn out to be a cult movie as well.

From the promos it's evident that director Imtiaz Ali has taken inspiration for the story from one of world's most iconic, charismatic and popular rockstar, Jim Morrison. There is even a passing reference to Morrision in one of the scenes.

There is no doubt that rock based movies have been very popular in Hollywood but Bollywood has not been very kind in this regard. The example that comes straight to mind is Vipul Shah's critically acclaimed LONDON DREAMS, which failed to excite the audience despite the presence of super stars like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. On the hindsight we have had Farhan Akhtar's ROCK ON! which was quite a big success though only in the metros and big cities. Rest of India (read masses) failed to identify with the film.

However Imtiaz Ali, who is very rooted to his origins, and knows the expectations and sensibilities of the Indian audience, has always managed to strike a fine balance between the mass and class, as evident from his last two super hits, JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJ KAL. So we are sure that he will not make a movie that will not be identifiable by all. In fact when we had met Imtiaz last year (just before the first schedule) he had accepted that this was going to be his biggest challenge, given the theme of ROCKSTAR.

Well, if Imtiaz manages to pull off ROCKSTAR, we are sure many other directors too will attempt to tread this difficult path.
