Decades ago when Mani Ratnam's NAYAKAN had released, it had showcased Kamal Haasan in a different avatar altogether. Story of a simple boy who turned into a gang-lord, it also inspired Vinod Khanna to come up with a remake DAYAVAN. Though ever since then quite a few films across different languages have tried to recreate the same magic, director Anand Kumar strongly believes that at least from the characterisation perspective, if not the entire film, Vivek Oberoi's part of Dhramveer Gurjar comes close to NAYAKAN.
Says Anand Kumar, 'I remember going to Vivek's house for the first time and narrating the script. I told him that this is today's NAYAKAN. The moment he heard that, he just got into that mode. In fact while I was talking, he started acting during the narration itself. As a director it was so motivating for me to see him get into the scheme of things. Even after the initial narration, post which he agreed to do the film, he started calling me home for the sessions. We discussed so much about the clothes, dialogue delivery, hair, action and everything else. The transformation came around so beautifully. I could see my NAYAKAN in him.'
A biopic based on real events, ZILA GHAZIABAD also marks the returns of Vivek in the role of a gangster, something that comes with the territory that he has created since the days of COMPANY.
'Vivek is such a brilliant actor and it's just that he hasn't got his due. Whatever reasons there may have been, the fact remains that in the kind of roles that he is seen in a COMPANY or a ZILA GHAZIABAD, no one can come near to him. Just look at the kind of personality and aura that he carries,” Anand says in awe, 'He is an actor who knows his job.'
We would love to see that translate on screen once the film releases on 22nd February.
